what is sup yoga teacher training?

SUP Yoga Teacher training is meant for yoga teachers who would like to add SUP yoga to their offerings.

It’s also for those looking to deepen their personal practice and paddle skills while obtaining continuing education credit (25 contact hours) for Yoga Alliance.

During SUP Yoga teacher training, you will learn to improve your paddle skills, learn water safety and paddleboard rescues, learn about equipment purchasing and the business of SUP yoga, learn how to adapt asanas to the paddleboard, learn to sequence floating flows, all while enjoying time out on the water in sunny South Florida and making new friends in the industry.

what sets our turquoise floating yoga sup yoga teacher training apart?

One of the things that I *wish* I knew before my first SUP yoga teacher training was that most SUP yoga teacher trainings are essentially continuing eduction for Yoga Alliance only and certified just by the Yoga School attended for training. While you will still learn valuable skills in a training like that, yoga credentials are not alway accepted if you’re hoping to teach at an outdoor center or want to obtain insurance for teaching SUP yoga on your own. That’s why I spent the extra time training to become a World Paddle Association SUP Instructor Trainer, so that I can also certify yoga teacher training candidates as WPA Level 1 SUP Instructors (as long as they meet the skill level required). This training is usually completely separately and costs at least $350 on its own in addition to the time and money spent traveling for another training. We are one of the only trainings in the country to offer the new ACA SUP Yoga Leader certification, which is widely accepted as the ACA (American Canoe Association) is widely respected in paddle sports. Now we are pleased to announce the newest credential added to our certification: International SUP Yoga Academy (ISYA) Level 1 SUP Yoga Instructor, which is recognized by SUP Yoga centers worldwide.

Please note that in order to be eligible for WPA SUP Instructor Training you need to have paddling proficiency and experience paddling. If you are not sure if you meet the requirements or would like some guidance on preparing to meet the requirements, please contact us!

Benefits of taking our combined training for all 4 credentials in one:

  • Become highly qualified to teach both paddleboarding & SUP Yoga at a high level!

  • Multiple certifications will make you stand out as a leader in the industry & make you an easy choice to be hired by outdoor centers.

  • Market your services in multiple industry databases: WPA Instructor database, ACA Instructor database, & ISYA database. This will be additional marketing that makes you visible wherever your clients may be searching for instruction.

  • Save time and money but earning multiple certifications at once instead of traveling & training multiple times.

This WILL set you apart as a leader in the industry.

how do i know if i’m ready for sup yoga teacher training?

SUP yoga is equal parts paddling and yoga. The following are what you will need to be well prepared to obtain certification:

🏄🏽‍♀️ To successfully complete WPA Instructor Training, paddling experience and a high level of comfort on the water and on a paddleboard are pre-requisites. You will also need to demonstrate all required skills with proficiency by the end of training.

🏄🏽‍♀️Current CPR & First Aid credentials are required in order to pursue WPA SUP Instructor and /or SUP Yoga Teacher credentials. This must be an in-person training (not an online only one). American Red Cross training is recommended for CPR & First Aid to be accepted by WPA & ACA. We offer American Red Cross CPR & First Aid training the help you satisfy this requirement. If you don’t already have current & valid CPR and First Aid credentials, you can either take a course locally in advance of our SUP Yoga Teacher Training, or you can opt to add on our blended learning American Red Cross CPR & First Aid to your SUP Yoga Teacher Training if that is more convenient.

🏄🏽‍♀️To be eligible to earn the ACA SUP Yoga Leader Certification, you need to be an ACA member. Cost of membership is $40 for the year and is paid directly to the ACA. Make sure to join the ACA prior to training if you’d like to be considered for ACA SUP Yoga Leader certification. Although not required, this is highly recommended as ACA credentials are highly respected in the industry and will help to set you apart. I will send you the link to join the ACA as part of the course information you will receive once you book.

🏄🏽‍♀️To be eligible to earn the ISYA Level 1 SUP Yoga Instructor Certification, you’ll need to join ISYA. Cost of membership is $50 for the year and is paid directly to ISYA. Although not required, this is highly recommended as ISYA credentials are recognized worldwide.

🧘🏼‍♀️Since this also involves teaching yoga, a RYT-200 Instructor credential (or equivalent training / experience) is needed. Current RYT-200 and above yoga instructors are be eligible for certification and may receive the 25 hours of continuing education for Yoga Alliance.

💙✨ As with any training, being open to learning new things and having a positive attitude is key!

💙✨ If you would like to join us to learn and develop your own practice, you are welcome to join us and participate, but may not be eligible for certification without meeting the above requirements. If you have questions about this - please contact us and we’re happy to discuss with you!

what if i want to attend but do not have all of the pre-requisites listed?

✨I recognize that not everyone will come into the training with an equal background. Some may be experienced paddlers and newer to yoga while others may be expert yoga teachers and newer to paddling. If you have any questions or would like to design a custom option, please reach out and we’ll have a discussion. It’s possible to make adjustments for individuals as needed. For example, if you’re brand new to paddling you are welcome to take all parts of the training, but may not be ready to be certified as WPA SUP Instructor yet. If you are not a yoga teacher but would like to attend the training to deepen your own practice, that is another possibility where you would be welcome to join us for all parts of training but would not be eligible for the Certified SUP Yoga Teacher credential. Please contact us if you would like to discuss a custom plan.

training schedule / what to expect:

HYBRID Online Off-Water Training: NEW! Our SUP Yoga Teacher Training is now hybrid! I’ve made the manual and off-water sections into an online course for you to complete before you come to in-person training. When you sign up, you’ll get access to the online portion of the hybrid training. This also organizes all the off water information in a way that you can go through at your own pace when you have time to focus instead of after a long day on the water. It also gives you the ability to go back and review anything from the online training at any point after training. It organizes all of your manual pages, video lessons, action items, and packing lists in one place to help you make sure you are ready to go for in-person training. It also allows us to spend more time on the water when we meet in person and prioritize paddle skills, water rescues, and SUP Yoga flows / modifications / cueing!

DAY 1 Pre-Training Meeting (or call): Participants & instructor will meet each other, and begin team building. This is your opportunity to share why you’re here and what your goals are, so we can best support you. We’ll review wind/ weather/ tide predictions for training and discuss and schedule adjustments needed based on weather. We’ll review expectations for in person training and make sure everyone is ready!

DAY 2 In Person Intensive 9:00am - 4:00pm: Meet at the lake for an intensive day including all of the following: equipment setup, off water intros (pre-launch briefing), best practices for safe launching, learn and practice setting anchors, example SUP Yoga flow taught by Meghan, discussion of modifications/ cueing & opportunity to impromptu teach a pose or quick flow section, lunch break, paddle skills practice, refinement, & teaching progressions (forward stroke, reverse sweep, forward sweep, side draw).

DAY 3 In Person Intensive 9:00am - 4:00pm: We will open the day with a recap of the most important skills, and Q&A. This is your day to shine and demonstrate what you’ve learned by practice teaching various aspects of what you’ve learned including demo-teaching paddle skills to other participants and having the opportunity to lead a SUP yoga flow of your own. All participants will share thoughtful and meaningful feedback to help everyone learn and grow in a safe and heart-centered environment. After demo lessons, get ready to get wet learning rescues including: safe falling, self-rescue, towing with a tow lie, towing with board stacking, guided self- rescue, assisted rescue/ heel hook, & flip rescues. We’ll close out with additional practice as needed, and final Q&A.
